back to the woods

Nancy Stedman

Thirty years ago I held my first solo exhibition at South Square in Thornton, near Bradford.  I filled two rooms with hanging wires that created the feel of walking through a woodland, with framed views, glimpses and networks of branches.  This work brings a different approach to the theme - based on a nearby woodland that has not been managed for many decades.  There is therefore a weird feeling of isolation to the wood, with massive fallen trees and branches lying where they landed, twisted branches seen against bright sky or dark thickets, and saplings struggling up in patches of light.
